Clean, Green and Clever 100 Challenge - Tasmania's new economy

The Greens gave Tasmania the ‘Clean, Green and Clever’ strategy. In her role as Australian Greens Senator for Tasmania, Christine Milne is working to support and promote progressive Tasmanian businesses. She has set herself the challenge of visiting 100 such businesses.

Nuclear Power - No answer to climate change

Nuclear power has no place in Australia. It is not a solution for climate change or energy security. Nuclear power is too dangerous, too expensive, and too slow to address climate change. In fact, it will add to global warming because of the greenhouse gas emissions generated by mining, processing and transporting uranium and nuclear fuel. If we are to prevent catastrophic climate change we need to reduce Australia’s reliance on fossil fuels. Nuclear power will only hinder the task of Australia shifting to a low-carbon economy.

Polar Bears Animation - Everyone's talking about climate change, even polar bears

Across the world, creatures as diverse as polar bears, frogs, tigers, pygmy possums, whales, orang-utans and turtles are struggling to survive as their ecosystems shrink as a result of global warming. Do you want to be part of saving them or driving them to extinction? You decide. Click here.

Climate Change - Fossil fuels are history

Climate change is the most serious environmental problem facing the world. Leading international scientists agree that human activity is disrupting the planet's climate systems. Fossil fuels, used for energy and transport, are major contributors to the problem. Without significant action to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels we will cause catastrophic damage to Earth’s ecosystems, triggering social and economic upheaval.

Gunns' Pulp Mill - Don't pulp our future

Tasmania’s giant export woodchipper, Gunns Ltd has proposed a native forest based, kraft, chlorine dioxide bleaching pulp mill for Tasmania’s beautiful Tamar Valley.

Senator Milne led the campaign against the Wesley Vale pulp mill in 1989 arguing instead for a Clean, Green and Clever Tasmania and is backing the community again in its campaign against this latest proposal.

Great Barrier Reef in Danger - The threat from climate change

The Great Barrier Reef in north-east Australia is one of the world’s great treasures.  But climate change is threatening reefs around the world, including the Great Barrier Reef. Rising ocean temperatures harm and can even destroy corals, and harm other marine and bird life.  Without urgent action to address climate change, Australia and the world risk losing the Great Barrier Reef and the marine and bird life that depends upon it.

Ralphs Bay - Conservation area not canal estate

Walker Corporation's horrendous canal development proposal for Ralphs Bay is back, bigger and uglier than ever.

The Greens have always opposed this dreadful development and are campaigning against it at both a state and federal level.

Species Feeling the Heat - Extinctions will increase with global temperature

For the first time in history, the majestic polar bear, the world’s largest land-based carnivore, has been listed as a ‘vulnerable species at risk of extinction’ by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

Global warming is melting the Arctic ice that polar bears depend upon for survival.  If this ice continues to melt at current rates, the polar bear could be extinct by the end of the century.

Uranium Mining - Keep it in the ground

Uranium mining fuels a deadly industry. All mined uranium ends up as radioactive waste from nuclear power stations, toxic for hundreds of thousands of years, or as fuel for nuclear bombs, the most destructive weapons created.

New Caledonia's World Heritage Nominated Coral Reefs - Mining threatens indigenous communities and their local environment

New Caledonia's spectacular coral reef system is the second largest in the world, after Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
Unfortunately the reef and associated marine environment are under threat from a huge nickel mine operated by a multinational mining company, Inco.  Since 2000, Christine Milne has been working with the indigenous Kanak people of New Caledonia to secure World Heritage Listing for this magnificent marine ecosystem.

Supporting Home Grown Food - Tougher food labelling laws needed

Christine's first speech as a senator to a public rally was to support Tasmanian vegetable growers in their campaign for country of origin labelling.

Despite strong public support for labelling that clearly shows where food is grown, the Howard Government has betrayed local farmers and exempted major supermarket chains from tougher labelling rules.

Switch on to a Sustainable World - Renewable energy is the future

Demand for energy is rising around the world. While in developing countries increasing energy use is driving improved living standards, in wealthy countries rising energy demand is increasingly used for luxury and non-essential products and services. Scientists tell us that our reliance on fossil fuels to meet our energy needs is contributing to climate change at a rate that is disrupting Earth’s natural systems.

We can use energy more wisely, by switching to renewable energy, adopting energy efficiency and avoiding wasting energy. To find out more about how to reduce energy use, download the brochure on energy efficiency. You can also order copies of our energy efficiency fridge magnet, with tips for small steps to make a big difference. Just contact the office by email or telephone.

Paying the Price for Oil - Let's get moving

The world economy runs on oil but world demand is growing faster than supply, which means high oil prices are here to stay.
